About Us
The Medtech Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MS-BME) program is an 11-month accelerated learning, team-based, and project-based curriculum in new medical device development. Since its founding in June 2019, the program has incubated more than 20 medical device companies that have collectively filed more than 7 provisional patent applications and raised more than $560k in funding.

We are uniquely positioned within the Lampe Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. This inter-institutional department provides an ideal environment to integrate engineering and medicine to improve human health and quality of life while students within our program are also able to take world-class entrepreneurship courses at either University.
The MedTech program enables students to participate in needs discovery activities through clinical immersion and shadowing at local healthcare facilities. Students then form companies to develop innovative solutions with potential for commercialization. While proving the efficacy and desirability of their solutions, the students execute on an industry-equivalent stage gate development process and develop a design history file to support a future regulatory filing.

Simply put, our program equips students with the right tools to identify and prioritize unmet clinical needs, develop solutions, protect IP, and launch with a strategy for market access and adoption. Along the way, students are mentored by seasoned entrepreneurs, legal scholars, venture partners, and best-in-class experts from a variety of disciplines.
This program is the perfect tool for:
- New grads looking to differentiate themselves from peers in skill, knowledge, and networks,
- Current or aspiring clinicians who want to leverage medical device development to drive clinical innovation, and
- Professionals looking to enhance or exchange their career trajectories.
